Job DescriptionReports To: Assistant Technical Director,
Laboratory or ManagerThe Laboratory Supervisor is a highly skilled
medical technologist who tests and analyzes blood and other body
substances to aid health care providers in the diagnosis and
treatment of patients. The Blood Bank Supervisor is responsible for
overseeing laboratory personnel, implementing processes, operating,
maintaining and troubleshooting the equipment used to analyze
specimens and ensuring that automated and manual tests are
completed in an accurate and timely manner.Job Responsibilities
include:
- Assist with the implementation of new tests/platforms and
projects.*
- Analyze and test specimens, including proficiency testing,
quality control and manual procedures, and report appropriately
according to protocol. Supervises laboratory personnel to ensure
that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained and
may perform bench assignments and scheduling.*
- Utilize complex information systems and middleware; collect,
interpret and review data, including quality control. Ensure that
all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from
laboratory's established performance specifications, and ensures
that results are not reported until all corrective actions have
been taken and the test system is properly functioning.*
- Maintain adequate inventory and conserve resources, and create
purchase requisitions when necessary.*
- Develops and reviews Standard Operating Procedures, and audit
with process improvement if necessary. *
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment. Perform
validation and correlation studies, including consultation with
manufacturers if problems occur.*
- Develop and coordinate staff training, competencies,
performance reviews and verify that testing personnel are competent
before performing testing independently.*
- Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all
lab and hospital procedures, NYS, CAP, HIPPAA standards and
infection control/safety guidelines. Oversee internal and external
proficiency testing, address recalls and manufacturer changes as
indicated. Prepare for and participate in applicable
inspections.*
- Monitors quality assurance and performance improvement
activities and maintain inter-and intra-departmental work flow by
cooperating with others. Develop effective relationships with users
and suppliers, and lead regular meetings. Keeps lab management team
informed of status and concerns.*
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating
in educational opportunities.
- Is flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as
assigned.*= Essential functionsPhysical Demands: May require light
lifting and carrying, including boxes, equipment, stooping and
kneeling, maybe required to lift up to 30 pounds. Repetitive use of
hands (eg. computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking or standing
for long periods of time is often necessary; must be able
physically to operate automation used in the job.Education:
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (or equivalent) and
registered as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist by
American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or
equivalent.Licensure: Meets NYS Department of Health requirements
and is currently licensed as a Clinical Lab Scientist.Experience:
Meets NYS qualifications and eligibility criteria to perform duties
as a Clinical Laboratory Supervisor.Additional Qualifications: Good
written and oral communication skills preferred. Requires ability
to work independently, prioritize work, manage time wisely and
adjust to changes in work volumes. Problem solving ability and
attention to detail is preferred. Is expected to facilitate
meetings within and outside the Cayuga Medical System.Schedule:
M-F, 7:00 am -3:00 pm; Weekend/Holiday rotation
