Hematology Oncology Associates of CNY (HOACNY), voted one of Central New Yorks Best Places to Work, is seeking to hire an experienced Certified and Licensed Medical Technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist or Technician to join our professional team. HOACNY provides cancer care services, Monday through Friday at three convenient locations in East Syracuse, Syracuse and Auburn. The laboratory is a full-service, day shift only operation which supports eighteen physicians and twenty four mid-level practitioners. HOACNY is CLIA and COLA certified and maintains regulatory compliance with all CMS rules and regulations.

As a specialty physicians office laboratory, we work closely with our doctors and play an essential role in our success in the services we provide. We are highly respected members of the practice, functioning successfully with teamwork and quality as our foundation. We prefer a well rounded generalist with a desire to expand their skills and knowledge, but will train according to background and experience.

JOB TITLE: Medical Technologist

POSITION STATUS: Non-Exempt

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs technical laboratory testing in the clinic laboratory.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to Laboratory Manager and Director of Laboratory Services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Repetitive finger and arm movements. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 25-30 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a medical environment. Works in hazardous and biohazardous areas of the laboratory and is subject to splashes, cuts and other injury from equipment, chemicals, and biohazard specimens.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned).

  1. Performs procedures in all sections of the laboratory including specimen collection for which competency has been verified by the designated trainer for the laboratory training program.

  2. Performs automated CBC, chemistry, immunochemistry, coagulation analysis, and urine testing.

  3. Performs hematological examinations. Examines smears referring irregularities in the specimen to the providers and lab director.

  4. Assists in bone marrow procedures, and properly collects and submits required materials and paperwork to appropriate hospitals.

  5. Performs microscopic examinations of blood and urine to identify abnormalities.

  6. Prepares reagents and controls.

  7. Inventories laboratory supplies and reports needs to ordering personnel in the lab.

  8. Enters patient specimens and enters test results in Laboratroy Information System.

  9. Prepares specimens to be sent to reference laboratories and completes patient log for these specimens. This requires the use of computers and scanners.

  10. Reviews laboratory results for extraordinary results before they are reported and forwarded to the patient's medical record, including reports on procedures processed in reference laboratories. Refers reports with errors to lab supervisor and lab manager.

  11. Maintains records of procedure performance, patient results and quality control and/or quality assurance. Examines and documents results of control runs.

Follows defined protocol for investigating out-of-control runs, and implements necessary remedial action with documentation.

  1. Maintains equipment in accordance with defined policies and protocols, and logs preventive and remedial maintenance of equipment. Logs performance of equipment, including daily temperature checks.

  2. Maintains a safe and clean environment by daily cleaning areas, washing counters, emptying trash containers, cleaning up spills and all other duties necessary to sustain an appropriate work area and in accordance with OSHA regulations.

  3. Contributes annually to updates in policy and procedure manuals. Input is given to Laboratory Manager and Supervisor.

  4. May participate in cost analysis and testing evaluation of existing and prospective test methods.

  5. May participate in research and development of new procedures and changes to current procedures. May participate in writing policies and protocols for new or changed procedures all of which must be approved by the laboratory supervisor.

  6. Performs all duties and tasks, technical and non-technical, assigned that are necessary to maintain peak performance of all personnel and clinical laboratory.

  7. Collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence, and compiles statistics as directed.

  8. Attends required meetings and participates in teams as requested.

  9. Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.

  10. Maintains patient confidentiality.

  11. Performs related work as required.

  12. Disposes of contaminated materials as per DEC and OSHA Regulations.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results. Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests. Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Ability to communicate clearly.

Education: Certification as a Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP)

NY State License

Experience: Six months experience as a medical technologist/technician in a hospital or reference lab setting is minimum standard.
