The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, NY invites qualified applications for a Staff Therapist. As a key member of the team in the Division of Student Affairs, the Staff Therapist will report directly to the Director of Counseling Services. This is an outstanding opportunity for a skilled psychologist/counselor to participate in the College's delivery of counseling services to students and to assist in the provision of a wide range of support programs serving approximately 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students. This is a 10-month position. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Counseling Services at SUNY-ESF makes available professional mental health counseling services designed to foster the development and psychological well-being of SUNY-ESF undergraduate and graduate students. Counseling Services at SUNY-ESF provides students with short-term counseling to meet the personal wellness, developmental, preventative, and remedial counseling needs of the campus community.

Responsibilities of the Staff Therapist will include but are not limited to:

  • Providing counseling services to include individual counseling, outreach efforts, consultation, evaluation, and emergency response;
  • Managing crises and psychological emergencies, and referring to appropriate local agencies and services as necessary;
  • Providing short-term personal counseling services and referring students for specialized and/or long-term treatment in the community;
  • Providing initial intake evaluation and psychotherapy/counseling to students to help them understand themselves and their environment to promote student learning, development, and success;
  • Implementing and participating in preventative and outreach educational programs for the campus community;
  • Responding to parent/guardian/family concerns regarding students' personal wellness and behavioral health;
  • Providing consultation and training to faculty, staff, and other student services regarding psychological development and behavioral health issues;
  • Maintaining records of counseling activity in accordance with prudent professional practice through current record-keeping/scheduling software;
  • Performing other duties as needed.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related mental health field plus 2 years of experience in a clinical/counseling position;
  • Licensed or license eligible in New York State (LMHC, LCSW, CASAC, etc.); and
  • Expertise in alcohol and other drug use, and men's issues

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a clinical/counseling position;
  • A minimum of one year of experience as a therapist on a college or university campus;
  • Familiarity with the changing demographics and counseling needs of current and future students;
  • Skilled in consultation, brief therapy models, group therapy, and in providing innovative and inclusive outreach programming;
  • Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds; and
  • Knowledgeable about issues involving stalking, dating violence, domestic violence, and sexual assault.
