Payroll Coordinator

Job Description:

This position is responsible for a broad range of payroll tasks including, but not limited to, the timely, efficient, and accurate processing of weekly and bi-weekly payrolls, employee payroll record and file maintenance, assisting with unclaimed property filings and research. Prepares employment verifications and maintains confidential payroll files. Staff & Student Payroll Processing: Utilize various systems to prepare and process Staff (weekly) and Student (bi-weekly) payroll disbursements.
Review time entry for proper submission and approval of time and follow up on missing information.
Enters new hire and payroll change information (e.g. tax withholding, direct deposit, deductions, etc.).
Reviews benefit and deduction changes including enrollment date, pay period amount, etc. Enter any applicable stipends.
Print payroll checks and upload ACH and Positive Pay files to bank.
Prepare and enter garnishment vouchers for payment by Accounts Payable. Other responsibilities include but not limited to: Provide timely customer service for payroll related questions.
Process any manual or replacement checks as needed.
Maintain payroll files including employment information, tax withholding forms, direct deposit forms, etc.
Identify, research, and troubleshoot check status, exception items, out-of-balance transactions, returned direct deposits, positive-pay discrepancies, old outstanding items, etc.
Complete monthly NYS Department of Labor reports providing employee counts.
Assist Lead Payroll Administrator with projects including but not limited to tax treaty dollar limit review, payroll tax returns, and unclaimed property filings.
Compile salary data for employment verifications.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Associate's degree in accounting or related field and two to three years' experience in payroll. Experience in large payroll environment (500+ employees) and knowledge of tax laws as they apply to payroll preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated proficiency in use of desktop software and spreadsheet applications required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Candidate should be detail oriented, with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines, possess a strong customer service orientation, the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all campus constituencies, and the willingness to work as part of a team. Able to handle highly sensitive and confidential information in a professional manner.
