Provides direct and indirect patient care in a healthcare setting.
The RN must effectively communicate with all team members about
changes in the patient's clinical condition or updates in care,
including reporting results of diagnostic studies and symptoms. The
nurse must accurately respond to changes in a patient's condition.
Additionally, the nurse must perform general nursing duties in all
assigned departments with adequate supervision. Ability to perform
a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and conduct reassessments
as per policy, including pediatric, geriatric, and general patient
populations. Ability to assess and reassess pain adequately and
utilize appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the
patient and family regarding pain management. Ability to revise the
plan of care based on the patient's response to treatment and
evaluate the overall plan daily for effectiveness. Ability to
perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per policies and
procedures. Ability to interpret results of waived tests and take
appropriate actions based on those results. Performs patient care
responsibilities considering age-specific needs. Knowledge of
medications and their correct administration based on the patient’s
clinical condition. Follows the six medication rights to reduce the
potential for medication errors. Formulates a teaching plan based
on identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of
learning, including family involvement as appropriate. Demonstrates
an ability to assist with procedures and perform services requiring
technical and manual skills. Treats patients and their families
with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial,
cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and
their families. Functions as a liaison between administration,
patients, and other healthcare providers. Interacts professionally
with patients and families, involving them in the formation of the
plan of care. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development
principles over the lifespan, providing age-appropriate care. Able
to interpret data about the patient's status to identify needs and
provide the necessary care. Performs all aspects of patient care in
an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the
likelihood of medical errors. Supports and maintains a culture of
safety and quality. Consults other departments as appropriate for
an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs. Communicates
clearly and appropriately with the Nurse Manager, Charge nurse,
co-workers, and physicians. Maintains good working relationships
both within and outside the department. Identifies and addresses
psychosocial needs of patients and families, communicating with
appropriate services regarding both in-hospital and post-discharge
needs. Documents care according to current standards and policies.
Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Coordinates
and supervises patient care as necessary. Demonstrates flexibility,
organization, and the ability to function under stressful
situations. Maintains clinical competencies. Handles demand for
patient calls and refills as needed. Obtains medical prior
authorization when required.
