POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Nursing (DON) maintains responsibility to ensure
that personal performance, group performance and achieved outcomes
conform to the principles of the Healing Environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Ensures that the nursing care delivered is grounded in the
principles of relationship-based care and reflects a patient -
family centered focus. Creates the expectation through role
modeling that professional nursing practice means working in
partnership with colleagues within nursing, other disciplines, and
the patient - resident - family to achieve the best possible
outcome. Demonstrates broad based knowledge of nursing in general
as well as knowledge specific to the chosen area of practice.
Applies nursing practice knowledge in daily interaction with
patients-resident- families and other members of the healthcare
team and holds staff accountable for the same.
Establishes clinical indicators and measures the quality and
effectiveness of nursing care delivered in the area of
responsibility. Acts to improve results and achieve nursing
clinical excellence. Anticipates quality or safety issues and takes
action to mitigate. Assures the reporting of adverse and near miss
events and investigates circumstances contributing to the event.
Develops and maintains systems for survey readiness.
Utilizes nursing research, nursing literature and evidenced based
information to find innovative solutions to achieve the best
patient-resident outcomes and enhance the patient - resident -
family experience. Fosters staff nurse engagement and creativity by
providing feedback, encouragement and recognition for innovation.
Serves as a role model and change agent to inspire transformative
nursing care delivery.
Creates a positive performance-oriented unit - department through
open and consistent communication with staff. Teaches and coaches
staff regarding expectations for patient - family centered care
that promotes healing and satisfaction. Promotes a standardized
approach to hand off communication to ensure patient-resident
safety. Facilitates care coordination through use assessment forms,
documentation, bedside report and time outs.
Analyzes workflow - work processes to ensure effective efficient
high quality nursing care delivery. Collaborates in the design and
improvement of nursing systems; and identifies the resources
required to ensure that interventions are safe, effective,
delivered on time and are culturally sensitive. Assures that
staffing and scheduling decisions consider appropriate ratios,
acuity and intensity of patient-resident care and the skill level
of the nurse assigned. Collaborates with the clinical leaders to
resolve resource issues.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
Minimum:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Preferred:
Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required;
Master's Degree preferred.
LICENSE:
Minimum:
Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse licensure.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
Three to five years' managerial experience and three to five years
experience in Long Term Care setting.
SKILLS:
Minimum:
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with medical staff,
other department managers, and the public in a professional and
courteous manner.
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people under
stress.
Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with
discretion
Preferred:
Broad knowledge base regarding LTC regulations
