Co-Director/Director of the Racial Justice Program Categories: General Administration, Other Position Summary The Co-Director/Director of the Racial Justice Program is part of the Law, Rights, and Religion Projects (LRRP) onsite team. The Co-Director/Director of the Racial Justice Program co-leads LRRPs substantive and administrative work with a focus on racial justice advocacy. Together, the Co-Directors develop and implement a strategic vision for the project, oversee the legal and advocacy work of the project, and lead fundraising efforts to meet funding targets. They report to the Faculty Director of LRRP at Columbia Law School. The Racial Justice Program produces original research on the impact of religious exemptions on communities of color and leverages that research into policy and advocacy interventions. Columbia Law Schools Law, Rights, and Religion Project is a unique law and policy think tank that promotes social justice, freedom of religion, and religious plurality. We analyze and develop strategies to address the complex ways in which religious liberty rights interact with other fundamental rights.Our mission is to ensure that laws and policies reflect the understanding that the right to free exercise of religion protects all religious beliefs and communities, including the nonreligious; requires respect for religious plurality and equality principles; and must be balanced against other liberty and equality rights where they are in conflict. Our work takes the form of legal research and scholarship, public policy advocacy, technical expertise and assistance for community-based organizations, legislators, and litigators, andpublishing academic and media analyses. This is a one-year term position - renewable contingenton sufficient funding. Responsibilities Programming Develop strategy to respond to the uses of religion to limit the scope of reproductive and sexual rights and the impact of such religious exemptions on communities of color Develop innovative approaches to understanding the relationship between religious liberty rights and racial justice, including serving as a thought- leader on this issue Work with grassroots advocacy partners and lead coalitions to develop and implement strategy to document and raise public awareness of the impacts of religious exemptions on communities of color through advocacy work, policy interventions, and popular media coverage and contributions Educate academic, advocacy, and public communities about impact of religious exemptions on communities of color through research papers/reports, conference presentations, and speaking engagements Produce and/or supervise the production of original research on impacts of religious exemptions on communities of color Coordinate and collaborate with Co-Director on all LRRP projects; give and solicit feedback on major written work, project plans, and strategies Assist in logistical planning for meetings, convenings, and conferences Management & Funding Draft annual budgets for Program initiatives; oversee administration of spending, finances, and payroll Research funding sources; conduct outreach to and maintain relationships with funders; draft grant proposals; prepare grant reports and other compliance documents required by Columbia Law Schoolor Columbia University. Oversee research assistant hiring and supervision Oversee relationships with outside contractors Oversee relationships with other Columbia University departments (business office, grants department, press office, etc.) Minimum_Qualifications BA required, JD strongly preferred. Managerial experience strongly preferred. Minimum 4-7 years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent writing, research, analytic, leadership and communication skills. Two to five years of litigation and/or advocacy experience. Familiarity with civil rights issues highly desirable; work on issues impacting communities or individuals of color required.Strong preference for applicants familiar with religious accommodation/exemption law, LGBT and/or reproductive rights. Leadership, self-motivation and an ability to work collaboratively essential.
